Steiner Group, a German engineering firm, has slipped through a legal loophole and won a contract to build gas liquefaction plants for Iran, sidestepping UN sanctions aimed at isolating the Islamic Republic.
Last week’s decision by the Federal Office of Economics and Export Control in Germany to approve the €100 million (Dh568m) deal has already provoked a protest from Israel and could put Berlin in an embarrassing position as it participates in UN deliberations on whether to step up sanctions against Iran.
The UN Security Council, consisting of the US, Russia, China, France and Britain – and Germany – forms a group of six world powers negotiating with Iran over its contentious nuclear programme. The group said yesterday it was weighing new UN sanctions after Tehran issued an unclear response to an offer of economic incentives in return for suspending uranium enrichment.
